Ebn Bessah and me
Tonight, after the closing hours of Starbucks, I found myself studying on the street lights outside the Cafe, so I remembered Ebn Bessah.....
Who is he? All i know about him is the following:
My mother used to tell me about him, she never met the guy either, but her father told her about him. He was the son of Bessah, a woman who used to work as an assistant in my great grandfather's farm in Menyat Saedan, Mansourah.
Ebn Bessah, being a poor kid, but loved to study, used to study on the oven in winter nights and also in hot summer nights, and when he joined the Universtiy in Cairo, as he was such a brilliant guy, he studied on the street lights because he had to save money or actually he had none to spare.
I wonder what was his name and where did he end up?

Which Starbucks?
I was in Starbucks too till it closed...
Starbucks on Poplar and Highland.
How nice is your story about Ebn Bessa. Ebn Bessa, since he was such a brilliant kid that he joined the University of Cairo long long ago, I can only imagine that he became a good doctor or respected civil servant(Mowazaf houkouma kadim) and his grand children now must belong to the educated elite. He must have cared about his children education and he would have the money for that. However his grand children may never know about his beautiful struggle because in Egypt we don't appreciate a person who comes from a modest origin. They possibly have no idea that their prosperity and respected situation in the society exist because Ebn Bessa was studied hard under street light. I hope some day every Egyptian can speak honestly and proudly about his or her grandfather even if he was Ebn Bessa.
correction of my email about Ebn Bessa,4th sentence: .....exist because Ebn Bessa had studied hard....
Thank you
Thank you Hossam for reading my blog, it gives me joy to have a new reader.
I really don't know what happened to Ebn Bessa, some of ppl I told them about him said he probably never existed and your grandpa made him up to encourage your mom to study! well i don't know, but he might as well existed, and became a really unique person.
What i know for sure is another person who was a collegue of my uncle in college, and he was really poor but so bright he made it after years and years to become a professor in that college, and he got his PhD from England, up till now my uncle always takes pride in telling this guy's story, and how he built himself from scratch.
